Western Food Fare In The Land Down Under

February 25th, 2010 by Bailey Wagner

When people hear Western food, they instantly think of Texas and cowboys. Not always so. Western food is a word mostly referred to the food in Europe and Western nations, including Australia, which has one of the most diverse cultures in the world. When it comes to the culinary scene, Australia is very multicultural, bearing Western food and other influences.

Because most of Australia’s history is founded on the traditional British food brought to the country by the first British settlers, Western food in the nation is very rampant. One can find hams and steaks very popular in the culinary industry.

A usual breakfast in Australia is similar to breakfasts taken in many Western countries. Light breakfast usually includes cereals, fruits, and toast. Likewise, a heavier breakfast is very comparable to a full English breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns and bacon. Beverages taken may include tea, coffee, milk or juice.

Lunch and dinner in Down Under is mostly very Western-like. Although meals differ according to the family’s background, common selections include roast meat, pasta, pizza, casseroles, vegetables, and barbecue. Considered outback food includes steaks, grilled rib-eye, and lamb chops among others.

For takeout foods, Australia has a wide assortment of takeout food, just like any other Western nations. Fish and chips is a very popular snack that is affiliated with the country and other Western nations such as England and the U.S. Hamburgers, sausage rolls, meat pies, are typically ordered to be consumed outside an eatery.

Australia is also lush with American fast food chains, such as KFC, McDonald’s, Subway, and KFC.

There are also lots of foods that while considered Western, are still very much an Australian icon. These include the popular breakfast product Vegemite, a salty spread applied to toast; ANZAC biscuits and pavlova cake, although New Zealand also lay claims to these ones; meat pies; and kangaroo meat.

As Australia, a former Western settlement, is highly wrought by its first British settlers back in the days, Western food in the country is pretty predominant. It is able to retain its native taste and iconic foods even though its culinary scene is molded by its settlers of diverse stocks.
