A much desired beach restoration mission started in late January in Playa del Carmen, Mexico has been completed slightly ahead of schedule much to the delight of beachgoers and tourists.

Over the last 20 years Playa del Carmen has found itself in a regular seasonal path of a number of tropical storms and hurricanes which have eroded the wide beaches around the area. The undertaking which has enhanced just about 2.5 miles of seashore was accomplished this previous week, February 18th, 2010.

The restoration required approximately 2.6 billion cubic feet of sand that was dredged from the ocean seafloor offshore from the seashore. Environmental analyses were done furthermore measures are being taken to ensure the encompassing area and delicate reefs won’t be adversely affected.

The government sponsored program was on the fast track and was completed ahead of schedule. This particular section of beach in Playa del Carmen is very popular and the aim was to complete the project in an effective and efficient manner, mission accomplished.

The good news for travelers to the area is a return to what many have recalled from past visits, very wide and white sandy beaches. The beach restoration makes Playa del Carmen’s most popular beach at 5-10 times the width of what it was depending on the section. If you have been to Playa del Carmen this is the area from the main ferry dock to Cozumel to the north car ferry dock, near Avenue Constituentes and just beyond. This section of sand is the most popular beach area and also has the largest concentration of Playa del Carmen hotels and condos and is easily accessed from the famous 5th Avenue walking mall.

Playa del Carmen resorts and booking agencies alike are overjoyed about the new beach as it gives visitors a lot of space to move now. We chatted with Chuck Ball the owner of Turquoise Reef Group; “Before the beach improvements we definitely heard numerous complaints about the shrinking beaches of Playa del Carmen and we have already received some positive feedback from recently returning clients”

In addition to the wider beaches the plan incorporated two new small boat docks designed to really improve access to the areas wealthy waters and improve the appearance for the beaches. Prior to now many small boats are simply tied off from the beach.

After an individual inspection of the beaches on February 16th, 2010 the majority of the work has already been completed and it is a dramatic distinction. There is certainly now plenty of room on the beaches for just hanging out or playing games, it really is a nice improvement.
