Chill Fall Short on Opening Night

For Immediate Release – April 26, 2008 – Edmonton, AB

The Edmonton Chill raised the curtain on pro basketball in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,132 in the City of Champions. Led by local favourite JR Patrick, the Chill fought gamely against the now 6-2 Bellingham Slam and dropped their inaugural game 129-125.

The Chill got 31 points from JR Patrick and 18 each from Rashaun Broadus and Teon but fell behind early by 11. The team regrouped and managed a big second half to head to the dressing room with a 62-60. The first year club struggled in the third but still worked a two-point lead as they entered the final 12 minutes. The Slam's experience really shown through in the final stanza as they worked their penetration and dish offense and wrestled away the lead in the final minutes. The Chill put on a frantic dash late and got within three points, but Bellingham was solid from the line and was able to hold on for the four-point win.

The Slam was led on the scoresheet by Lukas Henne with 27 follow by Tyler Amaya's 25 and another 21 from Jacob Stevenson. The real star for the Slam was Ryan Diggs, who despite scoring just 19 points dominated the play on the offensive end routinely finding his way into the lane and then spotting open shooters for open looks.

The same two teams will meet again tomorrow for the second game starting at 7:11pm at Grant MacEwan.
